How to Add Storage Space to Your Garage

Making your garage a multi-functioning space is possible with some strategically placed storage containers and the proper use of wall space. Store tools, gardening equipment, clothing and household goods in a convenient manner right there in the garage. Using a wall storage system can keep the larger garage space free of clutter, leaving ample space for parking one or two cars. A slatwall panel can be utilized in conjunction with storage cabinets, hooks, bins and shelving to create a comprehensive storage system.

Slatwall Panels

A slatwall panel that covers the majority of a garage wall will enable you to install upper cabinets and lower cabinets. Items can be stored inside the upper cabinets that are easy to lift and easier to find when located at eye level while heavier items can be placed inside the lower cabinets. Store landscaping equipment more succinctly with slatwall panels. Use the wall hooks to hang garden hoses, leaf and snow blowers, hedge trimmers or string trimmers and edgers. The wall can hold storage hooks, cabinets, shelves and bins. What can’t be stored successfully in cabinets, hooks or bins can be stored on shelves. Metal wire shelves can be hung from the slatwall installation to create overhead storage for plastic bins holding almost every type of item imaginable.

Shelves can be placed along any garage wall, leaving the garage doors free to open and close. Because they sit above ground level, they won’t interfere with cars parking. Buy aesthetically pleasing shelves in black, silver or white. The shelves are secure and can hold weights up 90 pounds per shelf. The shelves are hung on strong shelf brackets attached to the slatwall panels. The slatwall panels themselves can hold up to 100 pounds per square foot, making a four foot slatwall panel capable of holding up to 4 hundred pounds of stored items.

With shelves, the family can store off-season clothes and shoes in plastic bins or boxes. Just label them and place them overhead and when they are needed it is easy to retrieve the stored items which can easily be identified from the ground. Your storage area remains untouched when not in use or it can simply be used for another purpose because it can remain stationary or even be changed to hold nothing or something else if the owner desires the space for another purpose.

Using the garage in an optimal manner, gives the homeowner the best combination of miscellaneous storage, a work room and vehicle storage. The walls take on the task of holding all the stored goods, clearing the area needed to park your vehicles. Cabinets with doors cover the unsightly mess of many stored items. Hooks clearly allow the neat placement of other tools and toys, creating very orderly looking garage walls, even if they are covered with cabinets, shelves, hooks and bins.
