For many men, it all begins with the car. Cars transcend modes of transportation and become a status symbol. Engines are measured in cylinders, torque, and horsepower. A sleek automobile with panty-dropping pickup is coveted more than the ideal home in the perfect neighborhood. Dreams are measured based on how quickly a car goes from zero to sixty miles per hour, as well as the size of the engine block. And I would be the first to argue that there is nothing wrong with this picture. Men need fantasy to escape from the mundane routine of reality.
Time and again James Bond made it work for him, and he always managed to get the girl in no small measure to the type of vehicle he drove, along with his ability to exceed the speed limit at every available opportunity. If you’re looking for a more modern author, Michael Connelly endeared readers, as well as Hollywood, with The Lincoln Lawyer. If you haven’t seen it yet I won’t bore you with the details, but it’s a movie with a flawed male hero who doesn’t back down from a challenge. It’s entertainment in every sense of the word.
In the right hands, a sleek automobile becomes the pillar that holds the pieces of a well-written novel together. Even if the reader has only driven a Ford Pinto all his life, he can still appreciate the look and feel of a V-10 engine with 640 horsepower. Muscle cars allow men to dream about a world without speed limits and boundaries. And that is one dream that needs the seed of encouragement.
