Why Do Men Love Guns?

Guest Post by Lela of Ready Holster:

Guns have many reputations, whether true or false, that influence our perception of them and lure us toward them. Guns give the impression of power, protection, safety, control, strength but also danger, bloodshed and violence. So what attracts men to guns?

Hunters

From the start of our existence, men have been the hunters in almost all societies. Men are genetically and biologically designed to provide and protect. Now, when providing no longer involves going out into the wilderness to kill dinner, men still seem attracted to the power of a firearm which is no surprise. Men are set up as hunters and it comes naturally to them. Call it animal instinct.

Appearance

The male species in most mammals is the more beautiful and the more powerful species. They use their appearance to ward off predators and to attract females. In part, men are attracted to guns the way that girls are attracted to makeup; they feel more attractive with it and look more like a man.

Media

Jason Bourne pointing a gunMovies and the media have portrayed men as powerful and attractive with guns.  Take Bourne Identity where Matt Damon is holding a gun on the cover and in the movie he shoots his attackers while jumping down three flights of stairs without getting hurt. The movies that boys and girls watch from even a young age have conditioned boys to an affinity towards guns. Our society has told us that men who carry guns are protectors, fighters for freedom and get the attractive girls.

Sports

Men are into sports, shooting is a kind of sport, men are into shooting. It all makes pretty logical sense. There’s a skill and competition in shooting that involves aim and accuracy and talents just like any other sport. Truly it’s not any stranger that men should be attracted to guns than that they are attracted to sports. They’re somewhat in the same category.

The Bottom Line

Men like guns and the appearance and skills that go along with them.  It’s just a part of our society like how girls like dresses and high heels. It’s not anything to be overly worried about or to feel bad about. Guns are not equal to violence and murder; there are really good things that guns are used for like hunting and protection and recreation that don’t hurt innocent people at all.
