Brad and Dan: The Laurel and Hardy of Beer

There’s nothing quite like the combination of comedy and beer. The more you drink the funnier some comedy gets, of course, but Foster’s ad campaign that features two likeable Aussie guys, Brad and Dan, is a series of little classic comedy sketches in its own right.

And in true Aussie macho style, the ads are totally geared around men and the issues men have going round in their heads! Beer is additional to the main theme of the good call ads, where Brad and Dan sit in the cool of their beach shack, taking it easy, apart from when they’re answering calls on the Foster’s helpine phone that rings out at the beginning of each ad.

Brad and Dan from Foster's adsOn the other end of the line, there’s always a hapless Brit with a query he needs help with. Should John from Norwich shave his back hair before going on holiday? How should Tom from High Wycombe deal with someone who stands too close in the pub?

To all these conundrums, Brad and Dan have a witty answer at the ready. John should be proud of his hairy back – he’s ‘follicly endowed’ and, after all, he should remember that ‘waxing’s for cars!’

As for Tom, if he’s got ‘a bloke who’s all up in your grill when he’s chewing the fat. Like hearing your words isn’t enough – he has to feel them on his face!” then the Aussie duo have the answer. Brad tells Tom: “if you wanna beat one of these leaners, you’ve gotta be a shouter; shout at him like he’s in the next state.”

Just recently, however, Foster’s ads have turned a corner. We still see Brad and Dan, but now they’re enjoying the cool of their new favorite drink, Foster’s bottled beer – Foster’s Gold. Instead of being holed up in the shack, Brad and Dan are out and about, enjoying different social settings while drinking their gold beer. So far we’ve seen the boys schmoozing with Aussie actress, Holly Valance, at a fancy cocktail party, and Brad’s been seen drinking Gold at a garden party.

What Foster’s wants us to think is that the new premium beer is a drink for the guys, just like the original, but that women can enjoy it too. Who knows if women will start drinking Gold, but even if they don’t, the ads are highly amusing for their own sake!
